Growing together: how we train our coaching team for kids’ classes

← Back to news

Okawa Dojo has been part of community life in Baden since 2018. Over the years, not only our dojo and our classes have grown, but also our members – many of whom now take on responsibility in training.

From January 2027, children aged 7 and up and teenagers aged 12 and up will train in their own groups for the first time. We are preparing carefully: we train members of our dojo to become coaches and support those who already have teaching experience.

Doing karate and teaching karate

Performing a technique yourself and teaching it to someone else are two different tasks. Leading a group means explaining movements clearly, building exercises in a sensible way, keeping an eye on everyone and responding to different needs – especially with children.

That is why our new and experienced coaches meet once a month for a joint workshop. We work with tools for planning training sessions, try out how to teach content in an age-appropriate way and give each other feedback. Those who already teach can also question and develop their own approach.

Learning on the mat

The workshops are only one part of the training. In regular classes, our coaches gain practical experience and take on responsibility step by step. Experienced senseis accompany them, observe their work and give concrete feedback.

Confidence grows not from theory alone, but from repeatedly leading, listening, adapting and trying again. At the same time, a team culture develops in which questions and feedback are a matter of course.

Passing on experience

Our dojo leadership brings many years of Kyokushin experience and sporting success at national and international level. We want to pass this experience on – not only in how a technique is performed, but also in how good training is created and how karate is taught responsibly.

For us, developing our coaching team is an investment in the future of the dojo. When the first kids and juniors start training in their own groups in January, they should meet people who prepare their training carefully, guide them attentively and are ready to keep learning themselves.

We look forward to growing together with our team and the new groups.
